About this work

A single infant's face fills the lower portion of the canvas, wide blue eyes and an open mouth catching what little light there is, light brown hair and a pale blue-white garment just visible. Behind, in near-total darkness, small pale fish drift at different depths among faint rising bubbles, as if glimpsed in a night aquarium.

The palette is dominated by near-black indigo, broken only by the pale flesh tones of the face and the silvery flicker of the fish. Smooth blending on the features contrasts with the looser, scumbled dark background, and the deep shadow around the solitary staring eyes creates a quiet, uncanny, mysterious atmosphere.
